Everyone, especially when meeting someone new, is prone to making snap judgments.

According to a 2006 study published in Psychological Science. Our brain processes information about a person’s face in less than one-tenth of a second. Leading to quick conclusions about a new acquaintance’s qualities such as trustworthiness, competency, friendliness, honesty, and morality.

According to Vivian Zayas, a professor of psychology at Cornell University, this tendency dates back to evolutionary times. When we encounter strangers and need to assess whether they would harm or be an ally for survival.

Most of us believe the first impressions we come up with, too, says Alexander Todorov, a professor of psychology at Princeton University and author of Face Value: The Irresistible Influence of First Impressions. And although sometimes they can be misleading, first impressions do form people’s view of a person.

“Once we’ve formed a representation, it’s used as a filter for how we act towards them,”. Do you believe someone is trustworthy right away? You could give them more information. You might complain about them to co-workers if you dismiss them as a negative person.

From job interviews to sales calls, the adage “you only get one chance to make a first impression” holds true in many situations.

Do you want to make everyone you meet feel more at ease right away? Do you want to make everyone you meet feel valued and respected right away? In a nutshell, do you want to make a good first impression?

How can you ensure that you get off to a good start in any of these situations? What exactly should you say? What’s the most effective way to follow up?

There are, fortunately, ways to make a lasting impression.

Here’s how to ensure that others see you in a favorable light and make a killer first impression.

Match the Environment.

It’s crucial to think about where you’re trying to make a good first impression, whether it’s a formal job interview or a dinner date.

The reason for this is simple: context is important. It gives you cues on how to dress, look, and act. If you’re interviewing at a bank, for example, you’ll almost certainly be required to wear a suit.

Making a good impression requires selecting attire, grooming habits, and conversation styles that are appropriate for the environment you are entering.

Watch your mood.

If you’re having a good day, you’ll most likely appear happy, and people will be more likely to form a favorable impression of you. On the other hand, if you’re having a bad day, you might appear distant.

We sort of scan the world for threats, and facial expressions are really the first thing that gets processed. If someone is frowning or appears to be threatening, we register that as ‘Watch out.’

A positive mood is open, curious, and enthusiastic. A bad mood appears bored, rude, or hostile.

You can develop a positive attitude by smiling at someone, maintaining eye contact long enough to notice the color of their eyes, or sitting without crossing your arms or legs. This will give off a welcoming, open, and upbeat vibe.

If you’re having trouble changing your mood, think back to a time when you were enthusiastic or resourceful.

If you’re nervous, make a silly joke to yourself before entering a room. This will make your attitude and expression change almost instantly.

Look for similar interests.

According to Boothman, people who have a hard time connecting with others often find common ground with someone else in a matter of seconds. Asking questions like, “Does this person have an accent?” or “Is he or she wearing something you recognize?” can help you make an instant connection.

“We like people who are a little bit like us,”.

Start with your shared environment, such as commenting on the weather or something you notice in your surroundings, then move on to facts, such as the reason you’re gathering or a recent news story. There’s a good chance you’ll find something that both of you enjoy.

Turn your attention away from yourself and toward others.

When we’re in a new situation, we’re more likely to notice how we’re feeling rather than how others are feeling. Experts, on the other hand, suggest that we pay more attention to those around us “People will always remember how you made them feel.”

Putting the focus on someone else instead of yourself can help others see you in a better light. Making someone feel appreciated, finding a common ground to bond over, or sharing something interesting you’ve learned, for example, can all improve how you’re received.

Be Genuine.

It’s critical to be genuine in order to make a good first impression. If you’re constantly worried about whether or not you’re doing or saying the right thing, you might come across as insincere or overly strategic. “That inauthenticity is going to be picked up on by the other person, and it can be a little bit of a signal that there’s something you’re hiding and may cause the person to lose faith in you.”

Don’t lie through your teeth if someone you’re trying to impress brings up a movie you despise. Rather than agreeing that you enjoyed it, focus on one particular aspect which you do enjoy.

Before you receive, give (and assume you will never receive.)

Never consider what you might be able to get. Concentrate on what you can offer. Giving is the only way to form a genuine bond.

Focus on what you can get out of the other person, even if it’s only for a moment… and you’ll demonstrate that you’re the only one who matters.

Focus on the Moment.

Do not look at your phone. Don’t look at your computer screen. Don’t think about anything else, even if it’s just for a second.

You’ll never be able to connect with others if you’re preoccupied with your own stuff.

Give the gift of your complete focus. Few people are willing to give such a gift. Others will want to be around you and remember you simply because of that gift.

Don’t talk about other people’s flaws.

Granted, we all enjoy a good gossip session. We all enjoy hearing some dirt.

The problem is that we don’t always like — and certainly don’t respect — those who dish it out.

Don’t make fun of others. People around you wonder if you ever laugh at them when you do this.

Shower them with praise and appreciation.

There is never enough praise for anyone. Nobody. Whenever possible, begin the conversation by complimenting the other person.

People will appreciate not only your compliments, but also the fact that you care enough to notice what they do.

They’ll feel a little more accomplished and a lot more important as a result, and they’ll thank you for making them feel that way.

Lastly, and very important;

Take Control of Your Personal Presentation

Clothing, according to research, is another important factor in making first impressions.

But the most important thing to remember is who you’re talking to. What are people’s plans for attire?

You certainly don’t want to stick out like a sore thumb.

If you’re attending an event, check to see if there is a dress code. If you’re not sure what to wear to a party, you can also ask the host what the guests will be wearing.

Here are some ideas for making your appearance work:

Great haircut – According to Yale research, “bad hair days” have a significant impact on self-esteem and social insecurity.

Sloppy Socks – Socks that aren’t sloppy are for little boys, not men. Walking around in soiled clothes sends the message that you are not a man who values high ideals or strives for excellence.

Tuck your shirt in – You’re solid, put-together, and serious about your work. Wearing your shirt tucked in sends the right signals.

Shine your shoes – Seeing that perfect mirror shine reminds you that you hold yourself to the highest of standards.

Accessorize – You feel powerful and masculine when you wear a good-looking timepiece and with the right accessories. It can be a status symbol or a topic of conversation and makes for a killer first impression.
